After the Expofil yarn fair in June, spinners reported healthier order books as Asian stocks were reduced and demand from Far Eastern countries returned. This improvement was confirmed at the Première Vision fabric fair in Paris at the end of September, with the return of Japanese and South Korean fabric buyers.
But in spite of a new mood of optimism, the European textile industry still faces difficult conditions. Overcapacity has led to a number of regroupings and downsizings. Mills - struggling to compete for orders - are having to shorten production runs and increase flexibility. This makes manufacturing less profitable, particularly for printers - although the popularity of prints appears to be growing again.
Both yarn and fabric manufacturers have been unwilling to sustain heavy development costs. Subtle changes in handle and performance have therefore been achieved through the use of advanced techniques. The aim is to produce fabrics and blends which look and feel soft, light and natural, but which have the performance and easy-care attributes associated with man-made fibres. The most noticeable new trend - reflecting the more optimistic mood - is the return of colour, in reaction to the predominance of grey and black in previous seasons.
