MAS Holdings is a Sri Lanka-based company specialising in the manufacture of intimate apparel, sleepwear, leisurewear and sportswear. The company is engaged in a number of enterprises, all of which are joint ventures with at least one other party.
One of MAS Holdings’ key strengths is its ability to manage businesses by appointing and training suitable people. Another is its flexibility when locating new businesses. The company seeks to ensure that its costs remain competitive by assessing not only labour costs in different countries but also the duty payable in importing countries and any quotas which might restrict the volume of trade. MAS also invests upstream to ensure that its joint venture companies have an appropriate supply of fabric and accessories.
For the future, MAS is poised to pursue growing opportunities in the intimate apparel market. It has set a sales target of US$500 mn by 2005 and, ambitiously, aims to become world leader in the sector. However, given the US recession and the prospect of a global economic downturn, achieving these targets will prove challenging.
