an interlock fabric is a double faced rib-based weft knitted structure consisting of two 1x1 rib fabrics joined by interlocking sinker groups. It is made on machines equipped with two sets of opposed needles. This type of fabric has a bulky and soft handle and is used for making men's and women's T-shirts and also for producing furnishings.
a multifilament yarn in which cohesion is imparted to the filament bundle by entwining the filaments instead of, or in addition to, twisting. The effect is usually achieved by passing the yarn under light tension through the turbulent zone of an air-jet.
Intumescent system (flame retardancy):
a flame retardant system which undergoes charring and foaming upon thermal degradation (for example, when exposed to an ignition source such as a flame). A blown protective cellular char is formed on the surface of the textile, providing protection from heat and flame.
Islands in the Sea (microfibres):
a type of bicomponentyarn in which one component polymer is formed, during extrusion, as longitudinal strands within the matrix of a second polymer. The microfibres are formed by dissolving away the second polymer.
a series of quality management and quality assurance standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1987 as a means of rationalising various national approaches to the subject of product quality. The series is primarily concerned with "quality management", or the steps which an organisation takes to fulfil the quality requirements of its customers and applicable regulatory requirements, while aiming to enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve continual improvement of its performance in pursuit of these objectives. It is important to note that certification is not concerned with regulation or assurance of product quality, but with the fact that quality assurance and reporting procedures are formalised, in place, and meet ISO 9000 standards. The ISO 9000 series has two main roles: to provide guidance for suppliers who wish to implement effective quality systems or improve existing ones; and to provide the generic requirements against which that quality system can be evaluated. Variant ISO 9001 is used by a supplier who wishes to indicate conformance with specific requirements during design and development, production, testing, inspection and servicing. Variant ISO 9002 indicates a facility's conformance to quality standards in operations management, especially as it relates to quality control and customer service, but excludes those requirements which deal with design control.
a polyester resin based on isophthalic acid which generally has superior properties to those of a general purpose (ortho)phthalic polyester.
Isotactic:
a type of polymer structure in which groups of atoms that are not part of the backbone structure are located either all above or all below the atoms in the backbone chain, when the latter are arranged all in one plane.
Isotropic:
a substance which has uniform physical properties in all directions.
